After the Democratic convention, we argued the best way to measure whether the Convention was a success or a failure for the Biden campaign was with Joe Biden’s approval rating - which was quite pedestrian despite his rather substantial lead against Donald Trump. Biden fans will be pleased to hear that his approval rating has risen to an all time high, and there are now more people that approve of the Vice President (45.2%) then Disapprove ( 43.7%). This is Joe Biden’s best standing since December of 2019 - and suggest that of some the soft support for him, particularly among young voters, might be solidifying.

Biden also got a boost in the head to head polls. Take the following with a grain of salt – for almost all of the polls have been either from new pollsters or pollsters with a bit of a weaker track record. However, even with these constraints, we can say Biden picked up one percent, and tied his highest lead over President Trump in 2020 leading by 9.4%. A one percent bump is below historic averages, but given the strength of his current position, I’d say say the DNC should feel reasonably positive about their convention.

This should give them just a little more breathing room if Trump gains ground from the Republican National Convention. Early signs suggest he might, as he’s already gained a half point just from polls released over this past weekend. Keep track of the national picture over the next few days to see if Trump gets a surge right here - and you can see how Biden and Trump stand in key swing states like Florida and Wisconsin here.
